You need to know the strategy for keeping a score if you want to be a winner in a game of Bridge. The chief target of Bridge players is to score the maximum points possible. The winner is the partnership that has more score than the other. However, the scoring pattern varies from one variation of Bridge to another.

Basic facts about scoring in Bridge

Once the declarer meets the contract, his team receives points for every trick bid and the tricks taken over the contract level. At the same time, he also gets bonuses for meeting the contract level and other bonuses determined before the commencement of the game. If the declarer does not meet the contract, the opposite team gets points according to the tricks that fell short for the declarer to reach the contract level.

The bonuses vary from one game of Bridge to another. The bonuses are not the same in duplicate Bridge, Chicago, and rubber Bridge etc. You could score small slam, grand slam and game bonuses. The right way is to be in the know of things, particularly the type of Bridge game and the bonuses in play before starting a hand.

Different ways to score in Bridge

Normally, ‘duplicate’ and ‘rubber’ scoring are the two general methods of scoring in contract Bridge. Although these two methods seem similar, the components of the score vary. In Duplicate Bridge the scores are in the form of single numbers achieved by the team that makes a winning contract. The score is broken down into ‘above the line’ and ‘below the line’ components in Rubber Bridge. Both of these belong to the winning partnership.

Contract points: You can score this point for the level of the contract depending on the doubling or redoubling and the denomination of the contract.

Level bonus: You can win four types of bonuses for game, part score, small slam and grand slam. A Part score is a partial contract and is meant for something less than a game, i.e. less that 100 contract points. The vulnerability factor determines the games and slams. Since slams are counted as games, you win both game bonus and slam bonus when you score a slam.
